However, Real Sociedad responded swiftly. Bruno Fernandes was penalized for handball in the box, and Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the spot in the 70th minute to level the score.
The hosts pressed for a winner in the closing stages, creating several chances, but United’s defense held on to ensure the tie remains finely open ahead of next week’s return leg at Old Trafford.
