A Nigerian man who wrote a heartfelt letter from prison after being locked up by a creditor over a ₦1.137 million debt has regained his freedom, expressing gratitude to everyone who donated to help pay off the debt and secure his release.
This was revealed in a trending post on the popular social media platform, X (formerly Twitter).
In the viral post, the man could be seen walking out of the prison, a free man, weeks after being incarcerated over the debt.
Appreciating those who contributed to his freedom, he said in a video: “My name is Jonathan. I have just been released from Apapakene Correctional Center. I’m using this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who donated, contributed, or supported me in any way. I am so grateful.”
“You have no idea what this freedom means to me. From the depth of my heart, I’m saying a very big thank you to you all.”
This comes weeks after a handwritten letter, penned by the man while in prison, surfaced online.
The letter came to light after a group of Twitter influencers visited the prison for a friendly football match with the inmates.
During their brief visit, one of the inmates discreetly handed over the letter to one of the influencers, and it eventually found its way online.
The content of the letter revealed that the man was imprisoned over a ₦1.137 million debt.
As the letter gained traction online, a popular influencer known as Wizard took interest in his case and vowed to help secure his release.
A public donation campaign was launched, and within weeks, enough funds were raised to settle the debt, leading to his release.
Following the update about his freedom, many concerned individuals flooded the comment section of the viral post to share their thoughts and reactions.

Another take away from this situation is that education is very important. Imagine Jonathan wasn’t educated enough to use his intelligence to write a note to you? What could have been his fate?
You then imagine how many people are in prison today for similar or even less…
