The 20-year-old joined Dortmund on loan in January but has struggled with knee issues.
However, he impressed in his Bundesliga debut during Dortmund’s 6-0 win over Union Berlin, potentially earning a start against St Pauli next weekend.
Dortmund’s loan agreement includes a €35 million buy option, but the club can only trigger it if they finish in a European spot.
The situation mirrors their failed attempts to sign Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen permanently after previous loan spells.
Currently sitting 10th in the Bundesliga, Dortmund are six points off the European places.
